"A good first step would be to strictly enforce the existing laws, and severely punish (lock up and keep locked up) those who break them."

At one time the statistics were that something like 80-90% of serious crimes are committed by career criminals who have committed multiple felonies. Lock them up and see what happens to crime rates.

As to your speeding example - speeding is only a crime because there is a law setting speed limit :-)
Causing an accident because your speeding would be a crime.

Civil penalties are not crimes....

crime. n. a violation of a law in which there is injury to the public or a member of the public and a term in jail or prison, and/or a fine as possible penalties.

Those laws are a way for cities and states to get money in the name of safety. Just like the seat belts and plethora of crap to control you for your own good.....

Depends whether civil liberties are protected.
Well the big conclusion from their work is that there are a lot of commonalities across these mass shootings, and that most exhibited warning signs ahead of the shooting.

Here is an interesting article from the LA Times that makes use of the data the Violence Project collected on 167 mass shootings from 1966-2019. The article shows how many of the shootings could have been prevented by commonly pitched "gun control" measures.

https://www.latimes.com/projects/if-gun ... e-enacted/

They have a neat tool at the bottom that allows you to see the effect of incremental policy measures. If properly applied and followed up on, Red Flag Laws could have prevented 141 of the 167 shootings. What is also interesting, is that if assault weapons bans, safe storage laws, straw purchase bans, and mandatory background checks were implemented, they only could have prevented an additional 5 shootings.

Like Illinois?

Reporting with laws on the books can get warrants. Due process.

If state law doesn't work in these red flag gun control states the feds funding and targeting young law abiding citizens won't change that. Unless politicians want someone targeted of course.

So why did you support the federal gun control law but not Roe? My perception was you thought Roe was unconstitutional as it wasn't the role of federal government.

I am glad we have SAPA where law enforcement and bureaucrats can be charged for trying to enforce federal gun laws.....

"Red Flag Laws could have prevented 141 of the 167 shootings"

And drunk driving laws could prevent 100% of drunk driving accidents.

And if properly enforced, laws against guns and murders in Chicago could prevent hundreds of shootings a year.

A left-wing interior minister in Germany has launched a plan to confiscate all firearms owned by members of the right-wing political party AfD.

The AfD political party holds 81 seats in the German parliament and 9 seats in the European parliament.
AfD members who are hunters or marksmen and legally own guns would have them confiscated by the state, with Maier citing the reason that the AfD in Thuringia is “proven to be right-wing extremist.”

I will say Japan has a better deterrent than we do....

In Japan the death penalty is carried out by hanging. The prisoner is not told the date of execution until the morning it is carried out. The method of hanging is the long drop, causing instant unconsciousness and rapid death by neck fracture
